Background of the Study

Depression is a common mental health disorder that significantly affects academic performance, social relationships, and overall quality of life, particularly among university students. In Plateau State, increasing academic pressures, social isolation, and transitions from home to university life contribute to a heightened risk of depression among students. Recent studies have shown that depression among university students is associated with lower academic achievement and increased dropout rates (Ibrahim, 2024; Bello, 2024). Despite the critical nature of this issue, mental health services on university campuses are often limited, and there is a pervasive stigma surrounding the discussion of mental health problems. This study aims to determine the prevalence of depression among university students in Plateau State by using standardized diagnostic tools and self-report questionnaires. Additionally, the study will explore associated risk factors, including academic stress, financial pressures, and social support systems, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue. The findings will contribute to the development of targeted mental health interventions and support programs for university students.

Statement of the Problem

University students in Plateau State face significant mental health challenges, with depression emerging as a prevalent issue that adversely affects academic performance and overall well-being. Many students experience high levels of stress due to academic pressure, financial difficulties, and the challenges of adjusting to a new environment. However, due to social stigma and a lack of accessible mental health services, many cases of depression go undiagnosed and untreated. This gap in mental health support contributes to negative outcomes such as poor academic achievement, substance abuse, and an increased risk of suicide. The limited data on the prevalence and risk factors of depression among university students hampers the design of effective intervention programs. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically assessing depression rates among students and identifying key contributing factors, ultimately informing policy changes and support services on university campuses.

Objectives of the Study

1. To determine the prevalence of depression among university students in Plateau State.

2. To identify risk factors associated with depression in this population.

3. To recommend interventions to improve mental health support and reduce depression.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of depression among university students in Plateau State?

2. What factors contribute to depression among these students?

3. What strategies can be implemented to mitigate depression and improve student well-being?

Research Hypotheses

1. A significant proportion of university students in Plateau State suffer from depression.

2. High levels of academic stress and financial difficulties are significantly associated with depression.

3. Enhanced campus-based mental health services will reduce depression prevalence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will target students from selected universities in Plateau State. Data will be collected using standardized depression screening tools, questionnaires, and focus group discussions. Limitations include potential underreporting due to stigma and variability in mental health awareness across campuses.

Definitions of Terms
